The Editorial Verdict
Ghost started as a WordPress alternative and grew into a Substack competitor. The editor is clean, newsletters send reliably, and member subscriptions work out of the box. Self-hosting gives you full control over your subscriber list, which is the point. Setup is more involved than WordPress but ongoing maintenance is lighter.
